Outdoor Kitchens: Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about an Alfresco Kitchen for your backyard? We get it - there are a heap of things to consider. We have collated some of the most common questions we get asked here for you to reference.

Do I need an Alfresco Rangehood?

This question's answer depends entirely on your location and conditions. A BBQ requires an alfresco rangehood, which differs from a conventional range hood. These units are generally semi-commercial units with more than one motor and will need to move a minimum of 2000m3 per hour. Filters are made to a higher specification, and plastic components in a conventional rangehood are replaced with metal parts.

Because of this, they come at a premium price point. A range hood can be retrofitted after installing the Outdoor Kitchen, as long as there is a structure to fix and an available power supply. If you are unsure, seeing how your BBQ performs without one is good. If grease and smoke become an issue, you can install a unit down the track. If you have open walls and adequate ventilation, you may find that a range hood is not required.Do I need an Alfresco Rangehood?

Can I have my Outdoor Kitchen in the open?

You will need to know what materials are being used and their weatherability. At LimeTree Alfresco, we use a PVC polymer cabinetry-based system that will not absorb moisture and therefore can not rot or deteriorate. Our exterior surfaces carry a minimum ten-year warranty against fading, so it is possible to have an uncovered BBQ Kitchen if required. If your Outdoor Kitchen has extended periods of inactivity, you may want to consider investing in a cover for the unit.

Maintenance will need to be a priority. However, this should be a regular wipe down. Nothing too strenuous. Sun and moisture are the main things that will weather your kitchen, so it’s vital that you go with something that has UV stability and moisture resistance. In short, you need to ensure you have all-weather products, which is why everything we offer is designed for outdoor use.

What’s the difference between an Outdoor Kitchen and its indoor cousin?

Apart from the apparent = location, the main difference will be the materials used and appliances fitted in your outdoor kitchen. An outdoor kitchen will face a more harsh environment than your indoor kitchen, so the materials you use for an outdoor kitchen will need to be designed for the outdoors and the weather conditions it will face in your home.

A significant factor is to remember that you are dealing with a BBQ. Barbecues will generate up to 5 times more heat than an indoor cooktop. The grease and smoke caused need some serious consideration. The BBQ will have minimum clearances to combustible surfaces, so if your contractor is not heat shielding or ventilating components, ask why.  LimeTree Alfresco have assembled a range of materials that give you complete design choice around style and colour with the added benefit of being compliant and outdoor rated.

Can we supply our appliances?

Of course. As we talked about in last week’s blog, when we compared custom kitchens to modular kitchens, this is one of the great things about a customisable kitchen. Incorporating appliances you already own are quickly included in your design at the beginning of the design process.

Please be aware that we will advise if your choices are suitable for your project. You wouldn't try to convert an ageing BBQ off a trolley and build it in. It simply will not last the lifespan of the Outdoor Kitchen and could be a headache to replace. Also, note that bar fridges have glass doors doesn't necessarily mean they are outdoor rated.

Does an Outdoor Kitchen need any special maintenance?

Not really. Cabinets, bench tops and other surfaces can be maintained with a simple cleaning. A damp cloth and soapy water will clean most dirt, dust, and grease surfaces. Specialist cleaners for appliances are available, and we will bring you a blog post on the best later this month.

You'll need to pay attention to your barbecue and other appliances that require cleaning to maintain their efficiency. This doesn't have to be a big ordeal, though; cleaning a grill after each use will be enough. Preferably when your barbecue is still warm and covering your grill back up after you finish.

How long will my Outdoor Kitchen last?

Your Outdoor Kitchen should last for as long as you regularly maintain it. Whilst parts, including hinges and runners, may require replacing at some stage, the integral structure of the Outdoor Kitchen should last many years. Unless you have a catastrophic event, then the materials LimeTree Alfresco use will ensure you are entertained for years to come. It is essential to select quality appliances for this reason.

BBQs ensure that the firebox has a minimum ten-year warranty period. This is the body of the BBQ, and whilst burners and plates can be replaced, the body of the BBQ needs to be quality construction. Regular maintenance will also extend the life of all Outdoor Kitchen components. Once again, look out for a coming blog feature on maintaining all surfaces and appliances offered by LimeTree Alfresco.

Can you organise Plumbers and Electricians for us?

Sure we can.

We can organise plumbers and Electricians, or you can have someone you know that you'd instead use. Required trades and services can be discussed in your design stages, so we can either organise someone out for you or we can work with a company of your choice. Often these trades are locally based, and travel costs can be a factor if they are operating out of their region—a few things to consider; however, options are available.

Is there somewhere I can see your projects?

Absolutely. We have a project section of our website that features profiles of completed projects. However, if you're looking for more recent jobs, we regularly update our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter social channels for some design inspiration.

Our long-awaited showroom at 2/95 Brunel Road in Seaford will be opening the next month. Inside we will have two stunning Outdoor Kitchens on display, with one being a fully functional working design. There will be many inclusions from different colours and finishes to internal hardware choices. Keep a lookout on our social channels for updates.
